Lessons Learned at the DEA’s Fentanyl Free America Summit

In July, Tracy Vonder Brink attended the DEA’s Fentanyl Free America Summit in Orlando, Florida on behalf of DOITFORJACK. The inaugural event attracted thousands of attendees from across the United States and featured four days of seminars about fentanyl and the current state of the illicit drug trade.

Some key takeaways:

• Fentanyl continues to be the leading cause of drug poisoning deaths in the U.S.

• Drug traffickers are seeking out new synthetic drugs to introduce into the illicit drug market. In the last year, DEA labs identified over 50 illicit drugs for the first time.

• There are 30,000-50,000 active online drug sellers, but fewer than 4% comply with the law. Some of these unlicensed online “pharmacies” are selling counterfeit drugs that contain fentanyl.
